Poetry Challenge Day 4

Day 4 of poetry challenge is set in Prague 10 years after my first visit. This poem was shortlisted in the Bridport Prize.

Afternoon at the Café
Prague 2013

A daisy-eyed couple on their Honeymoon
are handling each other with care
flicking through The Lonely Planet
choosing the next destination
depending on the train schedules.
An Englishman yawns over his Daily Mail
he bought at a kiosk as his wife scurries
around the Palladium at the sales
guessing the exchange rate
of the pair of red shoes she needs.
Girls are with their frozen pineapple daiquiris
swatting away the cat calls and cigarette smoke
from the stags in their Praha Drinking Team t-shirts
as a tourist bus with flags from everywhere passes by.
The waitress arrives with macaroons and we sit there
sipping our espressos. This time we could be anywhere.
